Pipe line operators have a new communications tool to consider for remotely watching and managing events on their lines by linking onshore and offshore monitoring and control stations to their operations centers using LEO (low-earth-orbit) satellites. ORBCOMM's recent commercialization of a LEO satellite system that covers a substantial portion of the earth has enabled StarTrak Pigging Technologies to develop master control and monitoring stations that can communicate with the satellite system to provide operators with such capabilities as: enhanced inspection operations, including the monitoring of inline devices and flowrates; reliable data communications, even in severe weather; e-mail and remote operating capability.
