Statoil and Ruhrgas have together set up a metering plant which allows an objective comparison of the three most important methods of large gas flow measurement under field conditions. The plant concept offers a good basis for obteining reliable data for an evaluation of the three methods examined. Generally, orifice plate, turbine and ultrasonic flow meters perform equally well. Orifice plates offer the advantage of not requiring test rig calibration while metering facilities equipped with TMs or USMs reduce installation costs. TMs give higher readings when the flow is unsteady and are sensitive to particles entrained in the flow. For all three systems, further examination of the measurement behaviour under certain operating conditions (pulsation, temperature effects etc.) will be necessary. The benefits of ultrasonic flow metering - i.e. low pressure loss, no moving parts, possibilities of digital data analysis - will probably promote their use in Germany. Drawbacks include the somewhat problematic handling of the meters (which is why intensive manufacturer/vendor support will be necessary) and the purchasing costs which are still high compared to TM. After calibration it is important to keep the large number of computation parameters unchanged.
