In order to promote increased worldwide use of LNG as primary energy source, there are continuous efforts by contractors, gas companies and others to reduce the investment and operating costs for all elements of the LNG chain. One element in the LNG chain is the receiving terminal. All existing terminals are located onshore on large tracts of land, with extensive harbour facilities and often in densely populated areas. Kvaerner Maritime (KMAR) has for some time proposed floating storage and regasification terminals (FSRU's) based on the Moss spherical LNG tank, as an alternative to the conventional land based terminal. The authors have carried out concept studies in co-operation with clients and authorities. The results of the work have convinced them that a floating terminal in many areas can better meet the requirements and be a more attractive alternative than an onshore terminal. The objective of this paper is to present a brief outline of the floating terminal proposed by KMAR as well as to point out alternative concept solutions, novel technology ideas and synergy effects which can be easier applied on FSRU's than on onshore terminals.
