Pedestrian safety is an important reserach field and societal problem. From a vehicle manufacturers viewpoint there are two main drivers to undertake such research: pedestrian accident statistics, or the real world problem and a proposed European pedestrian safety draft directive. This paper provides a categorisation of different approaches to pedestrian safety research and this is used to describe the Ford Forschungszentrum Aachen GmbH (FFA) real world pedestrian safety research program in the context of these approaches.
