For safe operation of high-speed trains, it is necessary to detect, well in advance, obstacles that lie ahead. This paper describes the possibility of effective obstacle detection by means of a radar system using an electromagnetic beam waveguide consisting of reflectors, which serve as phase transformers, discretely arranged on either side of the tracks. the paper also discusses the basic characteristics of the beam waveguide.
