The justification for supersonic civil aircraft is considerably reduced journey time while maintaining subsonic standards of safety and operating economy. the principal design problems arise from kinetic heating and the complexity of the power plant and systems while sonic booms and jet noise constitute social and technological problems. Aircraft flying in the region of mach 2 are still constructed along fairly conventional lines but faster transports which are now being considered may increasingly adopt a titanium alloy structure and variable sweep wings.
