BHRA has designed and manufactured a large, four degrees of freedom motion simulator. Its primary task will be to simulate the wave-induced motion experienced by a floating oil production platform. The paper describes the design of the simulator including the hydraulic system, which uses both servo and proportional valves for controlling the four, large, purpose designed hydraulic cylinders. Some aspects of the computer based, closed loop control system are discussed.
