Guided weapon fin actuation systems require power and dynamic characteristics that can be satisfied by pneumatic, as well as hydraulic and electromechanical servo systems. Each type has its advantages and disadvantages and this paper considers some of these. However, the fundamental advantage of pneumatic technology, that of lower manufacturing costs, make it the preferred approach for many larger volume applications, and therefore recent progress towards more cost effective design is also discussed.
