The concept of steering high speed track laying vehicles is briefly reviewed and some examples of mechanical and hydrostatic transmission steering systems outlined. Progress in improving the power to weight ratio of compact axial piston transmissions is reported with examples and reference made to the application of separate high performance pumps and motors. A novel brake-assisted steering system, under development, is described which attempts to exploit the high efficiency point of a mechanical brake system with the infinitely variable steering obtained from a hydrostatic transmission.
