The ever increasing requirement for reduced exhaust emissions and noise, vibration and harshness coupled with increased performance, economy and driveability has been a conflicting challenge for automotive engineers. This paper describes some novel aspects of an aluminium, 4 cylinder lean burn engine. As part of the sophisticated powertrain fitted to the Ford Eltec concept car, it meets the challenge by using integrated microprocessor control. The paper discusses the design rationale and development of the base engine, a comprehensive system for control of intake charge velocity and density, a coolant management system to meet heat rejection requirements and the powertrain control strategies and calibration techniques employed in realising the initial demands. It also briefly describes the impact of the continuously variable transmission on engine development.
