Moulded asbestos brake linings are formulated mainly from asbestos fibres (chrysotil type); phenolic formaldehide resin as a binder; some additives to modify the different properties of the linings; and fillers. In the currently produced brake linings in Egypt; bazelt is used as a filler. Some undesirable properties were appeared, like the relatively high hardness; and coefficient of friction. In the present work the effect of replacing bazelt with silica flower was studied. The results obtained showed an improvement in both mechanical and functional properties. The wear rate was improved with about 30 % and the coefficient of friction was moderated.
