The effects of using alcohol fuels in passenger car diesel engines were investigated. A single cylinder swirl chamber diesel engine and a direct injection engine derived from it were fuelled with methanol plus an addition of suitable ignition improvers, or with alcohol-diesel fuel blends. Power, efficiency, and emissions were measured and compared to those of the same engine running on diesel fuel. Using alcohol-diesel fuel blends, nearly the same operating behaviour as with diesel fuel can be attained. While soot emissions are slightly reduced, the alcohol blends especially with the direct injection engine result in higher emissions of HC and CO as well as in higher mechanical loads, unless the injection timing is adapted. With alcohol-diesel fuel blends, there is no need of further changes to the injection system, but only a part of the diesel fuel can be substituted. Pure methanol operation of a diesel engine requires an adapted injection system as well as an addition of ignition improvers to compensate for the poor self-ignition quality of the alcohol fuel. An ignition improver volumetric percentage of 12 to 15 is necessary for good engine running under normal operating conditions. Due to soot-free combustion, a considerable increase in full-load power is possible. Gaseous emissions are on the same low level, efficiencies are higher, and mechanical loads are equal or lower compared with diesel fuel operation.
