ASEA has devoted considerable resources to robotizing assembly operations. Based on these experiences, a new assembly robot has been designed - the IRB 1000. The new robot will now be discussed. Apart from the actual assembly work, automatic assembly operations include tasks such as forward feed, orientation and fixing of components. To achieve a complete properly functioning assembly system, automatic quality control and supervision are also needed. This paper describes a number of different assembly function packages, all matched to specific applications. In particular the new FAST CONCEPT, based on the new IRB 1000, is discussed.
