This paper is concerned with an automatic transmission for small and medium sized vehicles and deals particularly with the basis for the choice of design and the detail matching of the transmission to the engine and vehicle. The considerations involved would be of general application but one particular design of transmission is described as a basis for the exercise. Economical performance depends on matching the transmission to the engine and vehicle. The best type is chosen from considerations of overdrive, ratio step and vehicle usage. A particular sort of synchromesh transmission is described and details are given of the use of computer prediction and rig testing to improve the fuel economy.
