This paper presents strategies for energy saving and reducing investment costs in centralized cooling systems. The many factors of convenience such as no corrosion or fouling problems, less maintenance and so on, offered by a centralized system have never been doubted. In the past when energy was cheap, it was on the basis of these rather difficult-to-quantify benefit offsetting the somewhat more expensive investment and operating costs that centralized systems were readily accepted. Today two main arguments are levelled against centralized system: 1. The installation is far too expensive 2. Pumping costs are higher, the paper presents possibilities to reduce the cooler investment cost by - Change of pressure drop for coolers - Increase of freshwater temperature out of central coolers. The possibilities for reducing pumping cost have been investigated with regard to - Optimize pipe velocity in low temperature circuit - Reduce of seawater flow through central coolers by using alternative pump configurations. - Alternative power supplies.
