This paper describes the initiation of B.L. Technology's laser development programme, its scope and objectives together with a brief description of the laser laboratory equipment and layout. There follows a discussion of the role of laser transformation hardening together with the results of a series of hardening trials on typical car industry steels and irons. Applications of laser hardening in the form of selected component case studies are given. The paper continues with examples of cutting applications, and finally concludes with observations on the prospects for volume production implementation of the processes described.
