A review of gear designs entering service since the introduction of gas turbines for ship propulsion shows a wide spectrum of philosophies inteded to meet traditionally exacting requirements. More recently, noise levels and price have become overriding factors. Experience in the merchant marine and industrial fields is used as a reference for promoting further development of surface hardened gears for naval propulsion, with particular emphasis on features, some novel, in design and manufacture, of benefit in reducing levels of transmitted noise.
