The paper discusses the recent changes in braking systems for non-rigid commercial vehicles which have been brought about by the adoption of EEC legislation in the UK. The traditional UK Construction and Use requirements for articulated vehicle three-line air pressure systems are compared with the two-line requirements of the EEC Braking Directives, and typical systems are described to illustrate the differences. The problems of interchangeability and compatibility of tractors and semi-trailers designed to the different standards are highlighted and the influences of both operators preferences and Type Approval requirements on braking system design are discussed.
