The performances for the projected Hong Kong mass transit railway (36.8 km, 60000 passengers/h, 37 stations, 200 passengers/train, 35 km/h average speed, 70-120 seconds per station) are discussed. The line capacities and the signaling and train control (automatic train operation) are the main problems of the designers. In 1980 the first part of the railway was operable. A number of failures were detected and eliminated.
