Fuels for transportation on land, sea and in the air are expected to continue to be liquids for the foreseeable future, and to be mainly derived from crude petroleum. With the main transportation growth concentrated on land and air transport, which require light products, and an extending use of solid fuels for stationary applications, there will be an increasing need to extract the maximum proportion of light products from expensive and possibly limited supplies of crude oil. There will also be an increase in the proportion of middle distillates required from the barrel. To meet these requirements outside North America there will be more use of conversion processes in refineries. These trends will result in the production of marine fuel oils which will more frequently be at the limits of existing specifications than at present and in economic pressures to extend these limits. The second part of the paper describes the results of tests in full scale marine diesel engines running on a fuel outside current specifications for carbon residue. The paper focusses mainly on the situation outside North America. (Wassmann)
