The availability of low-cost petroleum residual fuels has made major contributions to the growth of marine transportation and to broad use of economic diesel power. These developments reflect the technical accomplishments of many marine and diesel design engineers, however, the diesel engine could not have achieved its predominant position in marine transportation without the worldwide availability of suitable fuels. In a similar way, there can be seen today, the beginning of a trend toward the application of fuel oils for gas turbine marine propulsion. Petroleum fuels will continue to be available in the future and the economic incentive for their use will continue. Further, new crude discoveries, modern refining technology and improved supply and distribution techniques will provide fuels with slightly different properties which may require new quality control tests and handling techniques. In today's market, many types of marine fuels are available. This paper reviews the significant characteristics of these fuels. The relationship between fuel characteristics and the crude oil employed as well as specific equipment requirements are explained. This covers fuels for cross-head and trunk-type diesel engines and marine gas turbines; the individual requirements of each type of propulsion equipment are discussed. New crude oils will be discovered, environmental pressures will continue and even national tax laws may affect fuel properties. Each of these items is reviewed to present a view of the possible future changes. For marine applications, quality control precautions required in handling and preparing the fuel for combustion are reviewed. In addition to the problems of water and dirt removal, items such as wax deposition, asphaltene 'drop out' and special pumping problems must be considered. Further, each part of the fuel handling system including tank heating, settling, filtration, etc., should be carefully operated for maximum fuel utilization. In the final section, the effect of sulfur, ash and metals on combustion and overall engine life are covered. This includes discussions on heavy fuel combustion, high-temperature metal alloy and corrosion and corrosive wear.
