IHI-SULZER 5RLB76 type diesel engine, the first unit of the SULZER RLB series in the world, has been completed, and a series of development tests has been carried out at IHI's Aioi Diesel Engine Works. The RLB type marine diesel engine, currently one of the most advanced long-stroke models, combines a simple and reliable design with the ability to burn even poor quality fuel most economically. A summary of the RLB type engine was introduced in our last engineering review. This first unit, with an output of 13200 PS (9.7 MW) at 112 rpm, has been installed in a 65 550 MTDW oil tanker constructed at IHI's Aioi Shipyard for Japan Line Limited and will be put into service at the end of September, 1981. We have achieved satisfactory results from various kinds of tests including fuel injection system matching, reducing scavenging-air resistance, turbocharger matching and influence of compression ratio, mainly for reducing fuel consumption. A summary of these special tests are introduced in this paper. (Wassmann)
