IHI-SULZER marine diesel engines, type RLB, are currently of the most advanced long-stroke design which combines the same simple design and high power output with the lowest fuel consumption. The simple and reliable design of the bore-cooled combustion chamber without inlet/exhaust valves and valve gears assures low fuel consumption maintained in shipboad service. Moreover, the VIT (Variable Injection Timing) device permits automatic control of the permissible maximum combustion pressure - and thus the lowest possible fuel consumption not only in the function of load but also in fuel quality. Four kinds of ratings are introduced for the RLB engines for selection depending on the vessel. They include two MCRs and two economy ratings according to the propeller characteristics (ERP). At IHI's Aioi Diesel Works, the excellent performance of the RLB66 engine was confirmed by means of the first unit of the IHI-SULZER 6RLA66 engine which was shop-tested for 2 months last years. As a result of this test, we gained confidence that the lowest fuel consumption of RLB engines has surely been realized. (Wassmann)
