Theoretical analysis of skid steering of tracked vehicles. The vehicle and thus also each track is moving in a horizontal circular path at low speed. It is shown how the frictional resistance from the tracks against angular motion is overcome by longitudinal frictional forces from the same tracks. The coefficient of friction is taken as constant. During turning the tracks are given a certain velocity ratio from which an approximate turning radius is calculated. Due to track slip the real radius is often considerably larger. Power circulation occurs at steering. (Wassmann)
