The rising cost of diesel fuel has triggered increased interest in fuel consumption of diesel-electric locomotives. General Electric, a major locomotive manufacturer, has developed methods for the accurate measurement of both static and over the road locomotive fuel consumption. These methods were cooperatively tested with the Norfolk and Western Railway. The test program successfully verified that fuel consumption during revenue service can be accurately predicted from static test data. (Wassmann)
