This paper presents a method for the understanding and precise prediction of railroad wheel fracture and also describes on wheel design optimization for improving the fracture resistance through theoretical studies using FEM calculations. The experimental varification was also made by a full scale dynamometer. Conclusively, a fracture mechanics approach well proved the excellent fracture resistance of newly optimized wheel configuration, and the new designed wheel of low residual stress development due to thermal loads is expected to have a longer life in service.
