This paper analyses the causes of past towing casualties for oilfield equipment and suggests criteria for reducing repetition of them. It shows how any object can be towed in reasonable safety if it: a) is strong enough and b) is stable enough and c) has adequate searoom. It looks at the effects of each factor on towages of North Sea steel and concrete fixed structures and predicts longer tows of bigger structures in the future. (Se)
