The purpose of this paper is to present a reliable approach for predicting low-order superstructure resonances in ship structures by means of the finite element method. First, an outline of the analysis tool is given. Next, various modelling techniques are discussed with the aim of determining the most significant effects to be included in simplified and inexpensive models. Finally, a selected number of case studies of ships, now in operation, are presented. Data resulting from numerical analysis and measurements/experience are compared.(Wassmann)
