This paper is a presentation of Det norske Veritas' design guidelines for offshore cathodic protection systems. Design parameters, design calculations, fabrication and testing of the system are briefly reviewed. Current density requirements and calculations of anode current output and anode lifetime are discussed in more detail. In the design, due considerations should be paid to the time dependence of the current density requirements and anode current output capacity. The anode current output should be calculated in the initial stage when the current lifetimes requirements is greatest and at the end of the cathodic protection system's life when the anodes are nearly consumed and thus have their lowest current output capacity. When calculating the anode lifetime the mean current density requirement should be used. The paper ends by showing some examples of earlier design of cathodic protection for jacket structures located in the North Sea. An example of design according to the presented guidelines is included. (Wassmann)
