The U.S. Navy has been pursuing an advanced development program to improve the amphibious assault system capabilities. A major aspect of this program concerns the assault landing craft used in amphibious operations. The current effort is focused on the testing of two advanced development air cushion-supported vehicles designated JEFF (A) and JEFF (B). These are 160 ton all-up weight totally amphibious craft capable of speeds of more than 50 knots with a 60 ton payload. The craft are under test at Panama City, Florida. This paper reviews the development of JEFF (A). Various craft systems are discussed and operational test data available to date is reviewed with respect to measured performance and comparisons with predictions. (Wassmann)
