Some Fuel Economy aspects of the running of a large bus fleet are examined, and possible ways of improving mileage per gallon suggested. Alternative power units are considered, both from the fuel consumption and pollution points of view, and it is concluded that despite the drawbacks of noise and smell, the diesel engine is likely to remain the most economical automotive power unit. Other engines which are quieter, smoother, and which produce less nitrogen oxides from the fuels they burn, are much more expensive in first cost, fuel consumption, and in the safety of the fuels burnt. The importance of Nitrogen oxides in exhausts is questioned as a factor in determination of the type of power unit to be used for automotive purposes. (DePo)
