A status report is presented on the progress of P and WA's Engery Component Improvement (ECI) Program being conducted under sponsorship of the NASA Aircraft Energy Efficiency Office. This includes a review of JT8D and JT9D performance improvement and JT9D Engine Diagnostic portions of the ECI program. The general characteristics of JT9D Fuel Consumption Performance Deterioration and its causes are discussed and typical results shown. Performance improvement engine concepts are shown as well as the resulting potential fuel savings possible by incorporation of these advanced concepts in production version of JT8D and JT9D engines.
