In 1975, nine oil and gas companies including Conoco sponsored a joint program to lay and recover a 10-in.-dia, grade X-42 pipeline in 1000 ft of water by the reeled pipe method. The pipe-laying vessel used in this test was Santa Fe's 'Chicksaw'. The project was successfully completed. This paper summarizes the metallurgical data on the steel pipe before and after use in the deepwater, reel-type pipe-laying test. It assesses the metallurgical problems that may be encountered in this type of laying operation.
