The steadily increasing use of advanced electronics has given modern combat aircraft phenomenal levels of performance - but at a stiff price in initial cost, maintenance workload and aircraft availability. Now the emphasis in aircraft design is beginning to shift from the search for pure performance to the development of weapons systems that are affordable, maintainable and reliable. The authors discuss the challenges and benefits of avionics integration.
