There is increasing use of electronics at sea for communications, aids to navigation and instrumentation and control. Even very small pleasure boats and yachts commonly have some form of radio equipment, depth-sounder and performance instrumentation, while large boats have full communications, auto-pilot, satnav and radar facilities. To many owners, their boat's electronic equipment represents a considerable investment. After a boat sinks, becomes flooded or in some other way allows sea water to enter equipment, there is the problem of deciding whether it is worth attempting to salvage any items, and if so, what and how?. Therefore, the author discusses his experiences with equipment which has been accidentally soaked in sea water, and the results of his experiments to determine corrosion-rates, susceptible areas and the effectiveness of protection treatments.
