Thyristor technology has become widely accepted for traction duty, where such technology has resulted in considerably improved propulsion systems, providing fast, smooth and precise speed and torque control. For railway vehicles, this means better slip control, which has made it possible to take high tractive efforts close to the limit of adhesion. Up to now, thyristor locomotives from ASEA have been equipped with DC motors, but now that static high-power inverters are available the alternative three-phase induction motor drives have opened up interesting possibilities. The development of a thyristor controlled three phase asynchronous locomotive by ASEA is described. It is the company's largest development project in the traction field.
