The Bo-Bo mixed-traffic locos of 2100 kW ordered from GEC (UK) and built by UCW in South Africa are the first traction units to be delivered for Taiwan's 465 route-km electrification at 25 kV, 60 Hz. Weighing only 72 tonnes, they are designed to maximise use of available adhesion while maintaining a good power factor through most of the working range; this is achieved by having two rectifier bridges in series and operating the motors in three different modes as speed rises.
