Discusses, in the automotive context, a multiplex wiring system which is an omnibus term for a serial communications system. In its simplest form it consists of two wires, one for battery power distribution, the other for half-duplex serial communication, connected to a series of electronic modules round the car. The modules can be load switching units for one or more loads, transducer and switch data gathering units or more complex control units such as fuel and ignition control systems. There is a wide variety of options open within the omnibus term; simplex and full-duplex communication, and single or multi-master systems are among the more frequently used.
