The 12.7 km Line No.1 of the Lille Metro is briefly described and illustrated. Details of the rolling stock are given under the headings of chassis and running gear, traction equipment, and driverless operation. The two-car units run on pneumatic tyres with automatic detection of deflation, and are guided between pairs of side rails which also supply 750 V DC for chopper-controlled series-wound traction motors. Diagrams show the high- and low-voltage distribution circuits and motor arrangements for traction and regenerative braking. Graphs of armature and field currents, speed, and motor voltage during a cycle of acceleration and braking are reproduced. A traction motor, a thyristor power module and a chopper unit are illustrated. A section is devoted to traffic management from the central control station, and operations of preventive and remedial maintenance using semi-automatic test bays.
