The EW community has long recognized the need for broadband receivers with good selectivity and a high probability of intercept. The classical video receiver suffers from a lack of frequency information as well as susceptibility to simultaneous signal errors. The narrowband scanning superheterodyne receiver has good selectivity as well as frequency information but suffers from a critical shortcoming: low probability of intercept. Consistent improvement in the performance characteristics of surface acoustic wave devices, however, has made it possible to implement wide dynamic range channelized receivers that would meet the broadband receiver requirements of radar warning receivers (RWRs), electronic support measures (ESM), and power management systems. The SAW channelized receiver will play an ever-increasing role in EW systems as it becomes more important to achieve maximum performance in a high signal density environment.
