Development of dormitory areas on Dublin's western periphery has spurred proposals for electric suburban services that would be integrated with the existing coastal Howth-Bray route by two short cross-city tunnels. Electrification at 1.5 kV DC of the Howth-Bray line now in progress represents the first stage of a comprehensive rapid transit scheme. Chopper-controlled rolling stock combined with up-to-date signalling will provide a frequent and reliable service to replace the present diesel trains in 1983.
