As the Class Rc thyristor locomotive has evolved through five versions over 13 years, the feedback from Swedish State Railways' engineers to ASEA's designers has confirmed the value of easy component and subassembly replacement, but cast some doubt on the economics of doing this purely on the basis of distance run. SJ is seeking new methods of in-situ component testing so that replacement can be deferred until it is really necessary. The next step is computer-based maintenance records that will automatically generate failure and reliability statistics for use by the designer as well as the maintenance engineer. Ultimately, it should be possible for the designer to predict long-term maintenance needs, and thus optimise whole-life cost.
