Overhead electrification involves the designer in a mass of strength and clearance calculations that are repetitive, and therefore well suited to resolution by computer. British Rail has developed and tested programs for overhead equipment design, and their validity is being demonstrated on the London-Bedford electrification due for completion in 1982. With a 20-year programme of main line electrification covering some 500 track-km a year currently under review, the savings in cost and time achieved by computer aided design could be substantial.
