South African Railways has taken delivery of the first of a series of 25 locomotives for 50 kV 50 Hz operation from GEC Traction Ltd and Union Carriage for use on the 864 km Sishen-Saldanha ore haul. Sets of three of these 3780 kW machines will take over haulage of 20200 tonne trains from diesel motive power as deliveries progress during the year. GEC's design features thyristor control, and traction motors developed from those used in SAR's Class 6E1 3 kV locomotives. Performance characteristics allow a loaded train to be started on a 0.4 per cent gradient; in emergency conditions the locomotives can operate on half line voltage at reduced speed.
