Many students of locomotive performance have been showing an interest in estimating power outputs during runs which they have timed and requests have been received seeking advice on suitable methods to use for calculation. This of course is something of a delicate matter because almost everyone interested in this subject tends to have their own ideas about how to work out results from their logs, and do not take kindly to anyone else telling them how to do it. This is an understandable reaction. On the other hand there are those who have made attempts to do this kind of calculation but have been dissatisfied with the results obtained. It is hoped that this article may prove of assistance in such cases.
