Following a brief statement of the principle of the vibrating contact (mechanical) voltage regulator, used with car dynamos, and an explanation of the different requirements of the alternator, the improvements obtained by using transistor, printed circuit and solid state technologies are explained. The operating principles of the Boach, C.A.V. Lucas, and Sierrens devices (using Zener diodes) and methods of construction, are stated.
