The author discusses the need to change to a higher voltage than 12 V for cars. He goes on to discuss the possibility of using AC systems, concluding that they are not suitable except for special purposes. The author then goes on to discuss the choice of DC voltage systems, in particular generation, storage, engine starting, distribution, control, and utilisation. The use of a dual 42/12 V system and the alternator for such a system are also discussed.
