The primary function of ship model experiment tanks, such as the two operated by Vickers Limited in St. Albans and Dumbarton, is to determine, by means of measurements, all the parameters that are of interest to ship designers and builders. Among the parameters that affect the performance of the ship, the ones of special interest are those which cannot be completely estimated or calculated reliably, such as the bending moment on hulls, the quantity of water shipped on deck in waves, and the speed loss in varying sea conditions.
