When drilling for oil on the sea bed it is necessary that the ship carrying the rig is accurately positioned. A method is described involving four hydrophones and two receivers on the bottom of the ship, with two responding beacons on the sea bed near the drill. The acoustic signals are processed by two computers and used to control the position of the ship through lateral propellers fore and aft.
