A new control principle for positioning of half-submerged offshore drilling platforms or ships is presented. On basis of actual co-ordinates given by satellite navigation systems the deviations of the platform from a reference position in geographical coordinates is determined. Controlling forces generated by thrusters should eliminate these deviations. These forces are calculated at two stages - in the first stage generalized forces and moments are calculated, and in the second stage those are distributed to the given configuration of drives. The offered approach requires the determination of only nine parameters in the control law (against forty eight for the existing control laws), and it provides for qualitative control of the drives and precise positioning of the platform. An example shows the effect of the method.
